A North Carolina mother of two has been charged with misdemeanor child abuse for ordering her son to "beat the gay away" out of his brother before beating the 15-year-old herself.

Local CBS affiliate WCET reports, Police were called to an incident on West Walter Street Saturday, and officers say when they arrived, there were several people yelling and screaming, according to a Whiteville police report.

According to the report, a 15-year-old said his mother, Mary Gowans, had his 12-year-old brother strike him repeatedly, and he was not allowed to fight back. She then reportedly made the teen strip down to his underwear, and proceeded to hit him with a belt across his body repeating to him that she was trying to "beat the gay out of him."

Police say there was a large abrasion on the 15-year-old’s back.

The suspect, Mary Gowands of Whiteville, North Carolina claims that charges are false and that her son was intoxicated when he called police to report the alleged beating. In an interview with WCET news, she admitted to beating the teenager, but says it was for visiting a gay man’s house, expressing concern that the man was molesting her son. Gowans also claims that the older son hit the younger son, so she had the 12-year-old hit him back.

A year earlier, an hour north in Fayetteville, North Carolina, pastor Sean Harris faced angry backlash for comments he made instructing his congregation to punch their sons if they showed signs of being gay.

As reported in The Week, the Baptist preacher said "The second you see your son dropping that limp wrist, you walk over there and crack that wrist." Harris, who was preaching on marriage ahead of next week’s state-wide vote on the Amendment One gay-marriage ban, continued: "Man up. Give him a good punch."

After his words were posted on several blogs, Harris apologized for his comments, saying he was making a misguided attempt to be funny. "What I do stand by is that the word of God makes it clear that effeminate behavior is ungodly," Harris said. "I’m not going to compromise on that."

And the religious right wonders why their "religious rights" are being infringed upon.. it’s crap like this. How about we summarily execute anyone who preached violence without due process. Thank god we live in a democracy.

"How about we summarily execute anyone who preached violence without due process." (Is that a question?) So you are advocating executing someone without due process (summarily) for exercising their 1st amendment right to free speech? Murder is not a justifiable punishment for speech, no matter how inflammatory. And actually, the US is a republic. Democracy is nothing more than majority (mob) rule.

it’s not so bad what the "preachers" say , it’s that anyone believes them and doesn’t laugh out loud at them . much less give them money. this is what the republicans love.

Anony 2, I think Anony 1 was being sarcastic, not literal. Tongue firmly in cheek, so to speak. :)

Your bias is obvious. The world is not black and white. Whatever you think all republicans "love", you clearly have no idea beyond ridiculous generalizations.

Religion is a form of mental illness. It affects more uneducated people and should be stopped.

Here, here. Religion is an illness. You said it. Good for you. And anyone who sends their kids to a religious school or Sunday school should be charged with child abuse for filling there heads with this crap. Who supposedly reasonable people can fall for this religion stuff is beyond me.

Not only does it affect uneducated people, but sadly, even highly educated people still buy into the invisible entity crap. And sadly, they all use it as a license to perpetuate their hate onto children and other vulnerable adults. I say this, "it takes a VERY strong minded person to realize and know that religion is just wrong and believing in a non-existent "being" just shows how stupid and a follower people can really be." Truly intelligent people know it’s all fake and have the guts to say so. IT’S FAKE! Oh and for those "believers". let me say this. Just because the numbers are huge for believers, that doesn’t make it right. Just do a head count of how many billions of people throughout human history have believed in dictators and murderers. They weren’t right, now were they?
