A 19-year-old British teen was slammed with a 14-year prison sentence for stabbing a gay man in the chest in an anti-gay attack, Gay Star News reports.

Judge Elgan Edwards said Floyd Evans was guilty of an anti-gay hate crime and sentenced him for stabbing Francisco Nascimento, 35, in the chest on Oct. 21, 2013 in Cheshire, U.K.

Nascimento, a cleaner from Brazil, recovered from the serious injuries but has been left mentally distraught since the attack.

According to the Chester Chronicle, a court decided last month that Evans was found guilty of wounding with intent.

"It is a terrible thing to see a man of just 19 - only 18 when you committed this crime - standing in the dock," Edwards said. "But your behavior that night was quite disgraceful. "You were convicted correctly by the jury of wounding with intent to do serious harm. You armed yourself with a knife, wandered round the streets of Chester and found your way deliberately to the Walls at a place you knew well was a meeting point for homosexuals."

Edwards added: "I’m quite satisfied this was pre-meditated, homophobic attack - you did not have that knife on you for any other reason. "All this man was doing was talking to his friend, but he ended up nearly dead as a result."

Evans told the court he did not have "anti-gay views."

"Everyone is equal. My brother is gay and I’m perfectly happy with that’ he said," Evans said.

Nascimento says he suffers from anxiety, paranoia and insomnia as a result of the attack. He also no longer goes swimming because of the scar on his chest.

"I hope that Floyd Evans realizes that he could have been facing a murder charge had it not been for the lifesaving skills of the police, paramedics and surgeons," Nascimento said. "I thank God and the amazing people who saved my life. I will never forget the incident and will always have the scars, but I am also very grateful to still be alive."
