MONTPELIER, Vt.-Vermont lawmakers have taken another step toward legalizing same-sex marriage.

The state Senate vote 26-4 Monday to approve a bill that would do away with civil unions in favor of marriage for gay and lesbian couples. The measure, which would take effect Sept. 1, now goes to the House, where a week’s worth of hearings are scheduled to start Tuesday.

Civil unions still would be recognized.
