"The League" is an imperfect blend of douchebaggery and tomfoolery. The third season, available on DVD, ups the ante of the pranks and misadventures of a group of football players-- fantasy football players.

"The League" focuses on a specific niche, fans of fantasy football and irreverent humor. The show feels like a cheap "It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia" rip-off with a sports bent. Each episode focuses on some prank or weird misadventure based around some aspect of the fantasy football game.

Nick Kroll and Paul Scheer are great comedic talent but they seem wasted. Given the improvised nature of the show it seems like a lot of the scenarios and jokes are hit or miss. The season has some great celebrity guests including Jeff Goldblum, Seth Rogen, Sarah Silverman and Eliza Dushku but sadly they, like the cast, are under-utilized.

The third season DVD set includes extended episodes. However, with only ten episodes, the season is short even by cable standards. There are deleted scenes that aren’t particularly exciting. "Alt Nation" includes alternate takes of the improvised lines from various episodes. It is interesting insight into the unique nature of the show. "Taco Tones" includes all of the instances of music in the show.

"The League" is a lackluster attempt at replicating the success of "It’s Always Sunny..." and hits the legions of fantasy footballers. That being said the show doesn’t have any appeal to those outside those two niche markets. Fans of the show, however, may enjoy the additional jokes on the DVD.
